Popular music has been a long-lasting tool in Latin America to promote participation in social issues, relieve suffering and resist oppression for people in situations of marginalization and vulnerability. Using the inspirational, rhythmical and poetic power of Afro-Colombian music, Resonar Lab will highlight the different forms of daily life resistance, cooperation, solidarity and creativity that Afro-Colombians have been bringing about during the current contingency in a series of music videos.

Resonar Lab is a transdisciplinary venture founded in 2015 to explore the interplay between critical thinking, participatory art, music, science and technology. The Lab is composed of a diverse set of creative practitioners, activists and social leaders who share a common view of the possibility of fostering worthwhile transformations.

Colombia has the highest number of killings of environmental and human rights defenders anywhere in the world. The music videos Origen (Origin) and El Rebusque (Getting By) were inspired by interviews with activists in Colombia, the most dangerous country in the world for those who oppose the destruction of nature and defend human rights. Resonar Lab had the opportunity to interview several activists from the south of the country and then transcribed their conversations with them and visualized the most significant issues through software. With this information they invited a group of socially committed musicians to create these songs in which they narrate how the interviewed activists survive with creativity and courage in these difficult times.

Origen

The third and last video in the series "Music against repression" is Nos Están Matando - They Are Killing Us. This was made through a long-distance collaboration between socially committed artists from Colombia, Argentina and Germany. It includes images recorded during protests in Berlin, and in Bogotá, to which the Colombian State responded with brutal violence. The song's lyrics denounce the systematic repression and murder of activists in recent years and the government's turning a blind eye to the problem.
